What is a Crown?

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size.

A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.

Crowns serve many different purposes, including:

• Protecting a weak tooth from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth.

• Restoring an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down.

• Covering and supporting a tooth with a large filling.

• Holding a dental bridge in place.

• Cover a dental implant.

Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth-coloured) is the most popular. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they will eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and colour of your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.
