Inlays/Onlays

Dental inlays and onlays are restorations used to repair rear teeth that have a mild to moderate amount of decay. They can also be used to restore teeth that are cracked or fractured if the damage is not severe enough to require a dental crown.

Dental Inlays:

An inlay is a custom made filling made of white composite material, gold, or tooth-coloured porcelain. It is made by a professional dental laboratory and is permanently cemented into the tooth by your dentist.

Dental inlays are used to treat teeth that have decay or damage lying within their indented top surfaces, between the cusps of the teeth. They can also be used to replace old or damaged metal fillings. They are more conservative than crowns because less tooth structure is removed.

As with most dental restorations, inlays are not always permanent and may someday require replacement, but they are highly durable and will last many years.

Reasons for inlay restorations:

• Broken or fractured tooth

• Cosmetic enhancement

• Decayed teeth

• Fractured fillings

• Large fillings

Dental Onlays:

An onlay restoration is a custom made filling made of white composite material, gold, or tooth-coloured porcelain. An onlay is sometimes also referred to as a partial crown and sits on top of the tooth like a hat. It is made by a professional dental laboratory and is permanently cemented onto the tooth by your dentist. Dental onlays are used to treat decay that extends to one or more of the cusps.

Onlays also help to conserve more tooth structure because their use requires minimal removal a tooth’s surface. Perhaps their most important benefit, however, is that, in saving damaged teeth, onlays help patients avoid the eventual need for more extensive treatment with dental crowns, dental bridges, or dental implants.

Reasons for onlay restorations:

• Broken or fractured teeth

• Cosmetic enhancement

• Decayed teeth

• Fractured fillings

• Large fillings
